We are delighted to present this beautiful collectible model of the legendary Mercedes-Benz W198 300 SL Gullwing Coupé, which was manufactured from August 1954 to May 1957. This exceptional sports car, famous for its unique upward-opening doors resembling the wings of a seagull, is one of the most iconic, prestigious, and sought-after models in Mercedes-Benz history. A total of just 1,400 examples were produced during its production period, of which only 29 featured an all-aluminium body, further highlighting its exclusivity and collectible value.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was a true technological masterpiece of its time. Its power came from the legendary M198 petrol engine, with a displacement of 2,996 cm³ (almost 3.0 litres) and six cylinders arranged in an inline configuration. The engine was front-mounted longitudinally and tilted 45 degrees to the left, allowing for a lower bonnet profile and improved vehicle aerodynamics. The cylinder bore measured 85 mm, while the piston stroke was 88 mm, with a compression ratio of 8.55:1. The engine featured a single overhead camshaft driven by a double-row roller chain and a total of 12 valves, two per cylinder.
A particularly revolutionary technological feature was the Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection system, equipped with a six-plunger high-pressure injection pump. This made the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL the world's first production four-stroke petrol-powered passenger car with direct fuel injection. The standard engine produced an impressive 215 hp (158 kW) at 5,800 rpm, with maximum torque of approximately 275 Nm at 4,600 rpm. For additional reliability under high loads, the engine employed a dry-sump lubrication system, a technology commonly associated with racing cars. The engine featured water cooling, with a cooling system capacity of approximately 25.5 litres. Thanks to its advanced engineering, the engine could reach high revolutions and deliver outstanding performance for a car of the 1950s.
Power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed fully synchronised manual gearbox. The gear ratios in the later production version were 3.34:1 in first gear, 1.97:1 in second, 1.39:1 in third and 1.00:1 in fourth gear. The gearbox was connected to the engine via a single-plate dry clutch, while the rear differential offered different final-drive ratios that could be selected according to the desired performance characteristics. Depending on the rear differential ratio, the car's maximum speed ranged from 235 to 260 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h took approximately 10 seconds, an extraordinary achievement for its time.
One of the greatest engineering highlights of the 300 SL was its lightweight yet exceptionally rigid spaceframe chassis, constructed from welded steel tubes. This structure provided excellent torsional rigidity and safety. However, due to its high side sills, it required the installation of the distinctive upward-opening doors. This very engineering requirement gave birth to one of the most recognisable automotive designs of all time.
The suspension was independent on all four wheels. At the front, the car featured a double-wishbone suspension system with coil springs, while the rear was equipped with a distinctive low-pivot swing axle, coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. This construction provided excellent handling characteristics, precise steering and stability at high speeds, although the rear swing axle required careful driving during sudden changes of load while cornering. The steering system was mechanical, featuring a recirculating-ball mechanism with an overall steering ratio of approximately 11:1.
Braking was provided by hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels. The front brakes featured a special design with two wheel cylinders and ventilation channels for more efficient heat dissipation, while the system was equipped with a vacuum-assisted brake booster. These brakes were engineered to accommodate the sports performance and high speeds the vehicle was capable of achieving.
The vehicle's dimensions were also impressive for a sports car of that era. Its overall length was approximately 4,520 mm, width 1,790 mm and height around 1,300 mm. The wheelbase measured 2,400 mm, contributing to excellent driving stability. The fully equipped vehicle weighed approximately 1,295 kg, including the spare wheel, tools and fuel. The fuel tank had a capacity of approximately 130 litres, providing a good driving range even during more demanding sports driving. The car was fitted with 15-inch wheels and tyres measuring 6.50-15, with alternative sports tyre specifications available depending on the configuration.
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing combined sporting character with the luxury and elegance for which Mercedes-Benz was renowned. The two-seater cabin featured comfortable sports seats, large and clearly visible instruments, a classic steering wheel and an elegantly designed dashboard with chrome accents. Particular attention was drawn to the large round gauges, including the speedometer, tachometer, engine temperature and oil pressure indicators, along with other instruments required to monitor the powerful engine. The car also featured distinctive chrome details, high-quality interior materials, efficient heating and ventilation, and, depending on the configuration, optional equipment such as a radio, leather upholstery and different wheel designs. All these features contributed to the sense of exclusivity and luxury that this model represented.
