The name Prius comes from Latin, meaning "first", "original", or "ahead of its time"—symbolizing the car’s pioneering role in the development of hybrid technology.
Although Toyota officially adopted the plural form Prii in the U.S., Priuses is more commonly used in everyday speech.

Our model represents the second-generation Toyota Prius, codenamed XW20, which was produced from 2004 to 2009.

This generation was unveiled in April 2003 at the New York International Auto Show, going on sale later that year as a 2004 model.
Completely redesigned, the new Prius became a compact liftback positioned between the Corolla and Camry, offering more space for passengers and luggage.

Thanks to improved aerodynamics (Cd = 0.26), a smaller and lighter battery, and an innovative electric air-conditioning compressor, the new Prius was both more powerful and more efficient than its predecessor.
It was manufactured in Toyota's Tsutsumi and Fujimatsu plants in Japan, and from 2005, also in China for the local market.

The second-gen Prius earned a SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) rating and was ranked among the cleanest vehicles on the U.S. market by both the EPA and CARB.
By the end of production, around 1.19 million units of this generation had been sold worldwide.
