McLaren Ford MP4/8 – A technologically advanced F1 car from 1993.
26.05.2025.

The McLaren MP4/8 was the Formula 1 car used by McLaren during the 1993 season. Designed by Neil Oatley, it featured advanced electronics, including a semi-automatic gearbox, active suspension, two-way telemetry, and traction control.

It was powered by a 3.5-liter Ford V8 engine and was also the first McLaren to feature bargeboards.

Behind the wheel were three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna, in what would be his final season with McLaren, and Michael Andretti. After the Italian Grand Prix, Andretti was replaced by Mika Häkkinen. Senna scored five victories with the MP4/8, and McLaren finished the season as runners-up behind Williams.

Following a highly successful partnership from 1988 to 1992—during which McLaren dominated Formula 1—Honda withdrew from the sport, leaving the team without a factory engine. Team principal Ron Dennis was unable to secure Renault engines, forcing McLaren to use customer-spec Ford V8 engines, which were less powerful than the Renault V10s used by Williams, and even the higher-spec Ford engines supplied to Benetton.

It wasn’t until after the British Grand Prix that McLaren received access to more powerful Ford engines, but the power gap remained clear—customer Ford engines produced around 680 hp, while Renault’s V10s reached up to 780 hp, and Ferrari's V12 engine delivered around 745 hp.

Ayrton Senna praised the handling and agility of the MP4/8 but was aware that the customer-spec Ford-Cosworth V8 lacked power compared to the Renault V10 in the Williams. As a result, he chose to race on a race-by-race contract, reportedly earning $1 million per Grand Prix. Some viewed this as a marketing tactic by Senna and Ron Dennis to maintain sponsor interest. While the Ford engine was lighter, the Renault offered a better power-to-weight ratio, which made a decisive difference on the track.
